Material Traces of the Viking Assaults on Constantinople, 860–941 CE
Excavated weapon assemblages, burned destruction layers, and Scandinavian artefacts along the Bosporus document direct contact between Rus’ fleets and the Theodosian capital. Stratified finds from Istanbul and the lower Dnieper anchor the textual accounts of the 860 and 941 attacks in securely dated archaeological contexts.
