Writing on the Mountain: The Teotihuacan Glyphs of Chalcatzingo
Three fading red glyphic compounds in a small rockshelter at Chalcatzingo, Morelos, link a famous Formative-period sacred landscape to Teotihuacan ritual activity roughly a millennium later. Their identification strengthens the case that Teotihuacan possessed a genuine writing system, while the cave context raises a harder question: why did people associated with the metropolis travel to an already ancient ceremonial mountain?
