Side Chamber 3 of Theban Tomb 209, on the northern slope of Wadi Hatasun in South Asasif on the West Bank of Luxor, Egypt, preserves 16 human individuals in primary or partially primary contexts, a mummified canid, and a secondary deposit containing at least four people. Jared Carballo-Pérez of Leiden and La Laguna and Miguel Ángel Molinero Polo of the Universidad de La Laguna analysed material from Project two zero nine fieldwork conducted between 2018 and 2026 under Egyptian archaeological permits.

The sequence was reconstructed through microstratigraphic excavation, anatomical relationships, coffin use, photogrammetry, total-station recording, osteology and associated objects. Its phases are assigned from the Twenty-Fifth Dynasty through Persian and Ptolemaic use primarily by stratigraphy and material culture, with ceramic analysis specifically used to refine the chronology; the paper reports no radiocarbon dating. Earlier burials were more individually structured around coffins, while later deposits became increasingly superimposed and spatially interdependent.

Why It Matters

The importance is not that TT 209 was reused—reuse was widespread in the Theban necropolis during the first millennium BCE—but that this chamber preserves enough microstratigraphy to show how reuse worked at the scale of individual bodies. The study argues that crowding did not simply produce disorder. Coffins gradually ceased to define self-contained burial units, while earlier bodies, sediments and architecture became the framework within which later burials were placed. That gives archaeologists a more precise model for distinguishing sequential mortuary practice from an undifferentiated mass of disturbed remains.

The evidence is unusually strong for a contextual reconstruction: this is peer-reviewed original research by investigators directly involved in the project, based on detailed excavation records and osteological analysis. But the sequence is not independently anchored by radiocarbon dates. Flooding, burning, re-entry and uneven preservation complicate exact relationships, and the authors themselves treat some phase assignments and the original location of the burned secondary deposit as provisional. The study supports an ordered accumulative process; it does not prove why later mourners chose that system or that they consciously engaged with earlier occupants.
