Vilnius mummy head shows what survives when archaeological provenance is lost

A mummified human head in the National Museum of Lithuania in Vilnius has been identified as the remains of an adult man, probably about 25–40 years old, whose embalming involved removal of the brain through the nose. The specimen was examined in 2025 through the Lithuanian Mummy Project by researchers from the University of Salento, Vilnius University, Charles University and the University of Staffordshire.
CT scanning and 3D reconstruction documented the cranial treatment and dental disease, while chemical tests examined resinous material from the wrappings. Accelerator-mass-spectrometry radiocarbon dating of chemically cleaned linen produced a calibrated range of 816–753 BC at 90.2% probability, placing the wrapping in the Third Intermediate Period. The body tissue itself was not dated, so the chronology rests on the reasonable but unproven assumption that the linen and mummification are contemporary.
Why It Matters
The importance of the study is less that another Egyptian mummy has been scanned than that a specimen stripped of archaeological context can still yield a defensible biological and technological profile. CT revealed an unusual bilateral perforation of the cribriform plate during transnasal excerebration, while the empty cranial cavity and facial packing fit known variation in Third Intermediate Period embalming. The authors interpret the treatment as consistent with non-elite practice, but stress that technique and social status cannot be linked mechanically.
The paper is peer-reviewed original research in Frontiers in Environmental Archaeology, and its strongest conclusions are appropriately narrow. The linen, not the person, supplied the radiocarbon date; the proposed Memphite or Saqqara origin remains speculative; and the embalming mixture could not be securely identified. Chemical traces even leave open the possibility that dark material was retouched with coal tar during the specimen’s museum history. That combination of recovered evidence and irrecoverable context is precisely what makes neglected museum human remains scientifically useful but archaeologically limited.
