What the new buildings at Göbekli Tepe can and cannot show about who lived there

Rectangular buildings that may have served as dwellings have been exposed in a newly opened excavation area north of Göbekli Tepe’s better-known monumental enclosures, about 15 kilometres northeast of Şanlıurfa in southeastern Turkey. The 2026 work is led by excavation director Necmi Karul within the Taş Tepeler project. Excavators began stripping a roughly 1,500-square-metre area after earlier surface survey and geomagnetic measurements indicated buried architecture.
Karul says the buildings belong to Göbekli Tepe’s second phase and were found immediately below the surface, with some floors reached quickly because erosion had removed higher wall courses. Their internal layouts currently suggest residential use, but that identification remains preliminary: soil samples from floor levels are being collected to test what activities took place inside. The announcement does not state whether the second-phase dating of these newly exposed buildings rests on stratigraphy, architectural comparison or new absolute dates.
Why It Matters
The importance is not that archaeologists have suddenly discovered that Göbekli Tepe was inhabited. That interpretation has been gaining ground for years: the German Archaeological Institute now describes the site as a settlement with a strong ritual component. Published work also shows chronological overlap between round-oval “special buildings” and rectangular architecture; AMS radiocarbon measurements from earlier excavated contexts place the rectangular EPPNB phase broadly around 8700–8200 calBC. Those dates provide context, not a direct date for the newly exposed structures.
The northern excavation matters because it may extend that settlement pattern into an area previously known mainly through geophysics and provide floor contexts for testing how particular buildings were used. It also weakens the older model, associated especially with Klaus Schmidt, of Göbekli Tepe as an isolated ritual centre. Even so, “dwelling” is not yet demonstrated for every new rectangle. Karul explicitly says wall plans alone are insufficient and that floor-sediment analyses are needed. The evidence is promising but preliminary, reported during an active excavation rather than in a peer-reviewed publication.
