What poison on a 60,000-year-old arrowhead tells us about early human planning

Five of ten quartz-backed microliths from Umhlatuzana Rock Shelter, near Hillcrest in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, yielded residues containing the toxic plant alkaloid buphanidrine; one also contained epibuphanisine. The pieces came from a Howiesons Poort context excavated during Jonathan Kaplan’s 1985 rescue work, undertaken after the shelter was threatened by construction of the N3 highway.
Sven Isaksson, Anders Högberg and Marlize Lombard re-analysed the old finds using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, comparing the residues with historic poisoned arrows and modern Boophone disticha bulb exudate. The relevant deposits are assigned an age of 60 ± 3.5 thousand years by optically stimulated luminescence dating of associated sediments. Use-wear, impact damage and earlier experiments support interpretation of the microliths as arrow tips, although the objects themselves are not preserved complete arrows.
Why It Matters
The result matters because it converts a long-standing hypothesis into direct chemical evidence. Southern African archaeologists had already argued, from microlith form, hafting residues, fractures and experimental work, that bow-and-arrow technology existed more than 60,000 years ago. Until now, however, Pleistocene poison use rested on much less direct evidence, while chemically demonstrated poisoned arrows were thousands rather than tens of thousands of years old. The new analysis therefore strengthens the case that Middle Stone Age hunters combined projectile technology, plant knowledge and delayed-action hunting strategies.
The claim is unusually well supported for an “oldest” story: it appears in the peer-reviewed journal Science Advances, the poison biomarkers were found on five separate artefacts, and the team used archaeological, historic and modern comparison samples. The main caveat is narrower than the headlines suggest. Boophone disticha is the most likely source, not the only plant capable of producing every detected alkaloid, and the exact way these 60,000-year-old weapons were used cannot be reconstructed. The study establishes poison on probable arrow tips; it does not demonstrate that Pleistocene hunters followed prey exactly as historically documented poisoned-arrow hunters did.
