A University of Vienna-led study argues that painted pottery from a single walled oasis in northwestern Saudi Arabia functioned as a recognizable brand 3,200 years ago, traveling hundreds of kilometers while staying traceable to one production source. The case rests less on the pottery's beauty than on who bothered to copy it.
