A Village That Left Almost Nothing Behind: What Am Frevelgraben Can Tell Us About Medieval Abandonment
Near Halberstadt, archaeologists have exposed an unusually legible medieval settlement plan: rows of sunken-featured buildings, wells, plots and changing ditches, but remarkably few possessions and no destruction layer. The pattern is consistent with an organised abandonment, yet it does not prove a peaceful or voluntary departure. The unanswered question is not simply why the village vanished, but how confidently archaeology can reconstruct the act of leaving.
